Cars – A few hours after unveiling the Turbuto Italiano series of Tonale, Giulia and Stelvio cars, Alfa Romeo published a mysterious teaser on its official Facebook page. The dark image shows the LED taillights of the Tonali C-SUV under the title “A New Era Begins”.
The company did not provide any other information other than a description: “Stay tuned… a new era begins with Alfa Romeo.” This “new era” could be interpreted as a hint at Alfa Romeo’s first electric car which has been confirmed for release in 2024. However, it is clear that the taillights in the teaser clearly belong to a Tonale C-segment SUV rather than a B-segment car. -The smaller SUV, whose name has not yet been revealed. It will soon come with electric and hybrid options.
Does this mean that Alfa Romeo is teasing a new version of the Tonale? As a reminder, the Tonale compact SUV is based on the old Fiat Chrysler Small Wide platform instead of the newer STLA Medium. It is currently available with diesel, petrol, mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid engine options.
Daniel Thiago Josavam, Alfa Romeo’s product chief, considered the all-electric Tonali “technically possible.” But he made it clear that such a version had not yet been decided when he made the statement in February 2022. Around the same time, Jean-Philippe Imparato, CEO of Alfa Romeo, confirmed that they were already working on a Quadrifoglio version of the Tonale. But he added that they would not agree to produce it unless they received the “highest level of performance.”
Alfa Romeo has pledged to become an electric-only brand by 2027, when the Giulia, Stelvio and Tonale versions with conventional engines will be discontinued.
